Translation and publication of the New Testament in Belarusian

Many Orthodox parishes in Belarus introduce the Belarusian language during divine services. The growth of national consciousness, especially increased in recent years, leads to increasing use of the Belarusian language in the Republic and hence greater need in the literature in that language. This translation meets the needs of our society in the literature, especially in the Holy Scriptures in the Belarusian language. We hope that reading out in Church the Word of God in the native language will make it more comprehensible to the Belarusians and will encourage more people to come to Church.

In cooperation with the Bible Society, the Belarusian Exarchate Orthodox Committee continues to work on producing a New Testament in three earlier versions (Church Slavonic, Greek, Russian), with an accompanying new translation into modern Belarusian. Up to recent times, the worship services in the Orthodox Church have been exclusively held in Church Slavonic, with sermons in Russian. This new version, bringing a Belarusian text alongside more traditional church texts, will make Scripture more accessible, especially to younger people.

It is an ongoing multiyear project. In 2015, Epistles to Hebrews and of Jude, and part of the Revelation are planned to be translated; the planned date of completion of the translation – 2016.
